A recent study suggests that people who come off new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People using these drugs need to be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
